Russian Military and Security Research Group at National Defence University and the University of Helsinki
The Russian Military and Security Research Group, or Russia Research Group in short, was established in 2017 to facilitate research and instruction involving Russian military thought, strategic thinking, changes in Russian military power and art of war. The multidisciplinary research group studies contemporary military and security developments as well as the theoretical and historical undercurrents of Russian thinking. The Russia Research Group operates as a unit of the National Defence University Department of Warfare.
Understanding Russian security and military thinking has deep roots in the Finnish National Defence University’s traditions tracing back to the 18th century. The joint Mannerheim Chair on Russian Security Studies with the Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki provides a strong link to the Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian research communities.
The Russia Research Group forms a nexus for collaboration between national and international networks. The annual Russia Seminar held at the National Defence University has become an important forum for exchanging views on contemporary themes and sharing new research findings among scholars and wider audiences.
